Welcome To Calne Recreation Club

The Recreation Club is based at the Pavilion and grounds in Anchor Road and was formally constituted in 1983. The Recreation Grounds were originally gifted to the town by the Harris family in 1891. The Grounds were originally laid out as a park, a Pavilion was built and officially opened to the public in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The basic layout of the grounds remained unchanged for many years although the original Youth Club and a circular Cycle Track have been located on the grounds in the past. Although local sporting clubs had used the playing fields on an informal basis for many years, a formal base did not exist. A growing belief by the Council and other organisations that the town should have a base for amateur sport, culminated in the formation of The Calne Recreation Club in 1982.

The Club was formed with the express purpose of promoting and supporting the existing amateur sports in the town by providing a secure home for those organisations. The Club is now a Community Amateur Sports Club and managed by a full time Steward and the Management Board. The Board is drawn from the Constituent Clubs and Social Members and includes Officers of the Club. In recent years the Membership has expanded to well over 500 Members representing Bowls, Cricket, Pool, Rugby, Skittles, Tennis, Football and a strong Social Membership. Calne Recreation Club plays hosts to many District and County Associations and a Function Room is also available. In 1998 with the full cooperation and support of the Calne Town Council, the current Committee embarked on an ambitious refurbishment program and those works have now been completed.. The Pavilion itself has been extensively improved and now provides a comfortable and relaxed family atmosphere. The Bar, Kitchen and Function Room areas have been modernised yet still retain the period charm of the original Victorian pavilion. Further substantial improvements will be ready for the Spring of 2009. The Recreation Club has secured a long term lease with the Council to ensure it continues to offer its unique facilities for many years to come. We welcome all enquiries from prospective members, young and old. For further general information please contact Phil Thomas, Club Steward on (01249) 812206.
